We were made to work hard for our first yearling purchase of the sales season but we were delighted to secure this Kodi Bear filly who ticks lots of boxes!
As can often be the case, our shortlist seemed to be shared by many of the leading agents which made things very tricky in terms of valuations as the agents often have deeper pockets that us based on the fact that we pride ourselves on securing value for our owners.
This filly came into the ring very early which is often the best time to catch value, we would have had our hand up at band C money which is £40,000 and under but having seen that the vendor was stuck on the reserve price, we decided to leave the ring and look to secure a price after the hammer came down. As the day unfolded, it was apparent that the market was strong for the top 25% in the catalogue and we had to get a deal done for this precocious filly.
As mentioned above, she is by Kodi Bear and she has a fantastic pedigree, been a full sister to Front Line Fury who ran to a mark of 89 as a two year old and managed to pick up good prize money in both the Goffs Half Million and Ballyhane Stakes race.
She is also a half sister to flyer Maw Lam who was placed multiple times in group races including the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. We'll be hoping that we can repeat the results when combining a speed influenced stallion with a tough, stamina driven dam sire in Big Bad Bob.
Her dam was also a blacktype performer and there is a long list of stakes performers if you dive deeper into the pedigree.
The Kodi Bear x Big Bad Bob has also been a huge success to date with three winners from three runners, running to marks of 89,79,75 and we fully expect this filly to follow suit!
Karl needs no introduction to our owners, there is a long list of success stories from Spigot Lodge with a multitude of horses going onto stakes success having been sourced by Karl and Nick.
We fully expect this filly to be quick and Karl and his team are no stranger to fast filly by Kodi Bear, training Queen Mary winner Leovanni!
In another sign of confidence, Karl and the consignor have taken a 50% share between them...
Nick Bradley Racing have a good record when buying daughters of Kodi Bear, headlined by Epsom Oaks runner up, Mystery Angel. In more recent times, Bear Lee was picked up from this very sales ring in the spring and she looks to have a very bright future ahead.
We have ticked the box for the new Goffs initiative which sees maiden winners pick up a £25,000 bonus at the start of the season, this filly is the perfect time for those May maidens!
There's every chance that in twelve months time our purchase could look even better value if we can pick up some blacktype on a page that is already building a nice profile.
We will look to get her started in band C company early in the season, where we hope to pick up a £25,000 bonus before going onto some sensible early seasons targets such as the Lily Agnes, Hilary Needler and Woodcote stakes!
