We are delighted to have secured Lot 286, a Bated Breath filly out of the Cape Cross mare Caped Lady, from Coole House Farm at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. She combines a sire with an established record of producing high-class fillies with a family that has already demonstrated both racing ability and commercial appeal.
Bated Breath has repeatedly shown his ability to produce talented fillies. His daughters include Daahyeh, winner of the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes, and Viadera, successful at Grade 1 level in America. Sacred Bridge provided another striking example of his ability to sire quality two-year-olds, winning her first four starts, including the valuable Ballyhane Stakes and Group 3 Round Tower Stakes. That record makes him an appealing sire for our approach to buying fillies with the potential to compete for black type.
Our filly’s dam, Caped Lady, is an unraced daughter of Cape Cross and a half-sister to Captain Marvelous, a Group 2-winning two-year-old who was also placed in the Middle Park Stakes. This brings proven juvenile quality into the immediate family and adds substance to the pedigree beyond the sire’s achievements.
An especially interesting feature is that she is a full sister to winner Federal Envoy, meaning the Bated Breath–Caped Lady mating has already produced a successful racehorse. Federal Envoy was a €100,000 yearling who was owned by Clipper Logistics and trained by Karl himself. Karl and his team were keen to buy this filly based on her physical makeup but also knowing the family, Federal Envoy was a horse who the yard held in very high regard as a two year old but he suffered a suspensory issue which blighted his career.
Cape Cross is a significant name to have as a broodmare sire. His daughters have produced outstanding performers including Laurens, Tarnawa and Tahiyra, alongside Derby winners Australia and Masar. We see his influence as an attractive complement to Bated Breath’s speed, offering scope for this filly to develop as her racing career progresses.
Tattersalls Ireland has already provided memorable success for Nick Bradley Racing. Dandalla, a €22,000 yearling purchase, went on to win the Albany Stakes and Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes for Karl Burke. Corazon, bought for just £11,000, became a Group 3 winner in the Prix d’Arenberg at ParisLongchamp. Both demonstrated the opportunities this sale can offer to buyers prepared to look beyond the most fashionable pedigrees.
Karl also targets this sale with the valuable Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes in mind. Alparslan won the 2025 renewal at the Curragh and there has been many others who have gone over to pick up valuable prize money for a race that often lacks depth. Arkinthestars also ran in the race on debut for us picking up four figure prize money and giving her owners an excellent trip across the Irish sea.
We thank Karl for showing his support by taking a large share in this filly, we approached the sale slightly different this year looking to add some real quality six seven furlong fillies to our roster and we were delighted to get this filly for band D money. This means we can start off in band D restricted maidens as a two year old which give her the best chance on paper of landing her maiden before stepping into warmer company.
. We have done well in previous seasons with similiar types, targeting the lucrative £30,000 restricted novices before hopefully stepping onto the £100,000 Fillies Final at Goodwood, a race we have a very good record in and that record should continue in 2026 with three runners. As eluded to above, she will also be targeted at the Tattersalls Ireland Sales race so this filly is going to have plenty of opportunities to collect some good prize money.
